PSIS: Problem Solving Initiative Series
Introduction and Initial Case Workshop
Saturday, February 16th
12:30-2:00pm
Tepper 146
What is PSIS?
PSIS is a cooperative program between consultants at McKinsey&Co. and the students at Carnegie Mellon University, working together to build critical problem solving skills. It is more than just one event, but rather a series of inter-related activities designed to develop our ability to structure solutions for the kind of open ended challenges we face in our lives and careers. Through learning exercises, practice cases, interactive sessions, and advice from consultants at McKinsey&Co., PSIS will improve CMU students’ decision making and case interviewing skills. Investment in this process will improve your results in your future career as well as your job search.
Why is PSIS at CMU?
Carnegie Mellon students are known and sought after for their strong quantitative and analytical skills, but we lag other top universities in our ability to structure ambiguous problems and communicate the solutions. Even many of our strongest students fall flat in their case interviews. Top executives and management consultants succeed by integrating a broad range of information from various sources in their decisions, which is why the case interview has become a key tool that companies employ in their hiring decisions. Alumni at McKinsey&Co. know the value of Carnegie Mellon students and education, and want to help us prepare for and obtain these positions.
How can I be involved?
Involvement means commitment; the UCC and McKinsey&Co. are committing, and so should you. Developing skills takes time, so the earlier you get started the better! In addition to the initial case workshop and the final evaluation for this semester, there will be two sessions and three meetings. All pieces are interactive, and to benefit from this program, it is important to be fully engaged. Both the UCC and McKinsey&Co. hope that through these efforts you will improve your problem solving skills and achieve greater success in the recruitment process.
